Dear Sacred Heart Families,
I truly hope that all our Sacred Heart families had a chance to relax and rejuvenate over the summer. The faculty and staff are so excited to welcome our students back to a new school year. I have had the pleasure of introducing a number of new families into our school community this summer. I am confident that all our veteran families will extend a warm welcome when we return to campus and provide a helpful hand to our new school families in the true Christian spirit that is so familiar to our Sacred Heart community.
As SHS begins our 2020-21 school year, we find ourselves saying good bye to three amazing SHS educators. Mrs. Jessica Robles, the proud mother of her third son in 2019, has decided to stay at home with her boys following 13 years of dedicated service teaching at SHS. Last year's 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Bianca Lopez, has also chosen to leave education temporarily to stay at home as her daughter completes her last year of high school. And, finally, Br. Briley Venti, our 2019-20 PE teacher, has moved on to a different career path going into the new school year. Our Sacred Heart community has been blessed by the work and commitment to Catholic education of these wonderful teachers; to Mrs. Robles, Mrs. Lopez, and Mr. Venti, our prayers and love go with you all.
I would like to take this opportunity to give you a brief introduction to new faculty members of SHS. Joining our Sacred Heart School's faculty, Ms. Lauren Bashoura, will be our new 2nd grade teacher. Ms. Bashoura comes to Sacred Heart with a Masters in Education and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from APU. In addition, Ms. Bashoura comes to us with three years experience as a Parish Catechetical leader in the Sacramental Preparation Program. We'd also like to welcome back Ms. Megan Tice who taught in first grade last year as a long term substitute teacher. Ms. Tice comes to SHS with two Bachelor of Arts degrees from UCI and has worked with our SHS students drama program in past years prior to joining our teaching staff as our first grade teacher for the 2020-21 school year. In addition to returning to her position as our TK teacher this year, Ms. Nancy Brumley will be conducting the online PE classes for all our SHS students, grades
TK-8.
This year Sacred Heart School celebrates 67 years of commitment to academic excellence and our Catholic mission of service to our community. This time last year I noted that SHS instruction reached students from homes far beyond the Covina city limits; significantly different than education at SHS in the 1960's when most of its students walked or rode their bikes to school. This year, education at Sacred Heart moves forward in still a very different direction that no one saw coming. It is my hope and prayer that our efforts in Distance Learning will go far beyond the Covina borders of years past, and Sacred Heart students will participate in remote instruction and learning that will expand and afford our children's education with new and innovative learning opportunities.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Claudia K. Tice, Principal
In mid-March, 2020, every aspect of our lives was interrupted with the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic impacting education worldwide with demanding changes. What began as a typically fun-filled and engaging school year took a dramatic detour on March 13th and SHS efforts to educate our children was seriously challenged in just a blink of an eye.
I've come to realize that education for Sacred Heart and every other educational institution looks nothing like it did when we began our school year in August, 2019. Today, SHS has joined the world community in our need to address one of the greatest obstacles education has ever faced. How we teach our children during a pandemic and stay at home order was now the foremost question and challenge.
Remarkably, I am at peace and encouraged by the collective response of our SHS community during this pandemic. Technological devices in hand, and text books at home, Sacred Heart teachers and parents have heroically taken on our current health needs with grace and determination to keep our children' s quality Catholic education a priority. For SHS, instruction has remained rigorous and continuous. We've never missed a beat; providing our students with a strong academic and spiritually fulfilling education while placing equal value and concern for the health and welfare of our entire school community.
While the world universally addresses the daily ramifications of this health threatening virus, the Sacred Heart community continues to move forward mobilizing our forces to meet COVID-19 head on with innovative instructional solutions for our students. Armed with great fortitude and resilience, we will continue to uphold the values expressed in our school Mission Statement. And, in an effort to preserve and secure our students' educational future, faculty, staff and parents are committed to working together to provide our children with the exceptional Catholic education that they deserve, whether Online or on site.
As principal of Sacred Heart, I confess with great pride, that SHS faculty and staff has worked diligently to incorporate distance learning within our current instructional program. I am very proud of and excited for what our professional school community has achieved together since mid March as we continue to address and work out the challenges and the innovative learning opportunities that accompanies remote learning.
Going forward into next year, with God's love, grace and guidance, I am confident that SHS will continue to grow and flourish by providing our students with the best that Catholic education has to offer, whether we are online or in the class room.
I look forward to the day when we can celebrate this fabulous school community and each other again, face to face and not device to device. My sincere appreciation to our faculty, staff, parents, clergy and students for your continued love and support of our Sacred Heart School students. I couldn't be more proud than I am right now to be a part of this amazing Catholic school community!
God's blessings always,
Mrs. Claudia Tice, Principal
